How to clean your Apple products

Introduction

If you're like me, your Apple products are like family members. You wouldn't think of washing them, but it's important to keep them clean and in good working order. That's where I come in (and why I recommend purchasing a new computer every 2-3 years). Here are the steps for how to clean your Mac computers and iPhones/iPads:

To clean your Mac computer, Apple recommends turning it off.

Unplug it from power before starting any cleaning process.

Make sure to shut down your Mac before cleaning—you don't want water or other liquids getting into its circuitry! If possible, you should also take out any removable storage devices (like USB drives) that may be plugged into ports of your device so they're not accidentally damaged during cleaning.

To clean the display on an iMac or iMac Pro, Apple recommends using a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth.

To clean the screen, Apple recommends using a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. Make sure to use only water and not any other kind of cleaner or polish on the screen. A dry microfiber cloth would also be helpful in drying off your iMac after cleaning it with the wet cloth.

To clean the exterior of a MacBook or MacBook Pro, Apple suggests using a anti-static, soft cloth.

Use a soft cloth. Avoid using paper towels, which can scratch the finish and leave behind lint.

Avoid abrasive cleaners and alcohol-based cleaners, as they may damage your MacBook's exterior coating.

Avoid compressed air or a vacuum cleaner; these methods are too aggressive for the glass on your Macbook Pro or MacBook Pro Retina (unless you've already got some serious grime under there).

To clean your iPhone, Apple suggests using a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth.

If you have an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch, you’re not going to need to use any special cleaners, Apple suggests using a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth. The devices are made of a very durable material and can withstand most regular cleaning methods.

When cleaning your Apple device with wet cloth, make sure it's dry before putting back on its case or turn it on again. You don't want the moisture getting inside the device since this will cause damage over time (and possibly void your warranty).

Don't spray liquid directly on the devices.

Don't use a cloth that is not specifically designed for cleaning Apple products.

Do not immerse your device in water; this will damage it and void any warranty you may have purchased from Apple or if you purchased one from another company.

Some gentle cleaning is fine for most devices but make sure you avoid liquid and hard scrubbing

Avoid getting liquid in any openings.

Avoid getting liquid on the screen.

Avoid getting liquid on the keyboard.

Avoid getting liquid on the ports and connectors, including headphones and USB-C chargers (which can be used to charge your Apple device).

Conclusion

So, whether you're looking for tips on how to clean your Mac, iPhone or iPad, these are some great tips. But remember that even if you use a special cleaner and follow all the steps we've outlined above - nothing will be able to make an iMac look brand new again!
